The day's word CLOUD

A great cloud of witnesses

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.Hebrews 12:1, BSB

Hebrews 11 is often called the "Hall of Faith"—a gallery honoring men and women who anchored their lives in God: Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and countlessly more. Some witnessed miraculous victories, while others suffered hardship and died without seeing the full fulfilment of what was promised on earth.

Chapter 12 opens with a powerful conclusion: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us."

These heroes of the faith stand as witnesses whose lived stories testify that trusting God is always worth it—even when the final promise lies beyond our immediate sight.

The Christian life is not a brief sprint; it is a marathon requiring steady endurance. Crucially, we do not run in isolation. A vast crowd of believers has traversed this path before us, offering encouragement through their legacy.

When fatigue sets in, look to their example—and then, as the writer urges in the very next verse, fix your eyes ultimately on Jesus.

Reflect

  • Which individual's testimony of faith gives me renewed courage when I feel like giving up?
  • What extra weight or sin do I need to lay down so I can run with greater freedom?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the great cloud of faithful witnesses who have gone before me. Teach me to run my daily path with patience and endurance, keeping my eyes fixed firmly on Jesus. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
