The day's word FRUIT

The fruit of the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23, BSB

In Galatians, Paul identifies nine distinct qualities: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."

Notice he uses the singular word "fruit," not "fruits." This isn't a buffet where we get to select our favorite traits and ignore the rest. It is a single, interconnected harvest—the character of Jesus actively taking shape within us.

Crucially, Paul calls this fruit, not a personal achievement. An apple tree doesn't produce fruit by striving or stressing; it produces apples simply by staying healthy and rooted. Likewise, these Christlike qualities develop naturally as we stay connected to the Holy Spirit and walk in step with him.

That brings immense relief. We cannot force love or produce patience through sheer willpower—when we try, we inevitably fail and carry the guilt. Instead, the Spirit produces this growth in us over time, frequently using the very circumstances that test us to mature us. Right before this passage, Paul contrasts "the acts of the flesh" with the fruit of the Spirit. The distinction is clear: self-effort strives, but the Spirit cultivates.

Reflect

  • Which aspect of the Spirit's fruit do you feel a need for right now?
  • How can I keep in step with the Spirit today?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for your work in me. Grow your fruit in me: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
