The day's word CHOSEN

A chosen people

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.1 Peter 2:9, BSB

Peter was writing to believers who were scattered, persecuted and often looked down on. Peter tells them who they really are: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."

These titles once belonged to Israel at Mount Sinai. Now Peter applies them to everyone who follows Jesus, Jew and Gentile alike.

Chosen. You are not an accident or an afterthought. Royal priesthood. You have direct access to God and serve him. Holy nation. You belong to a people set apart for him. God's own possession. You are his treasure.

And all of this has a purpose: to proclaim his goodness. We are chosen not for privilege alone, but to show others the God who brought us out of darkness into light.

Reflect

  • Which of these titles do I most need to hear today?
  • How can I "proclaim the virtues" of God this week?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for choosing me and calling me into your light. Help me live as your own and show others your goodness. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
