The day's word COMMIT
Commit your way to the LORD
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it.Psalm 37:5, BSB
"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it."
The Hebrew word translated "commit" here literally means to roll. It paints a picture of someone straining under a heavy load, then rolling it off their own shoulders and onto someone strong enough to carry it.
Psalm 37 was written for people troubled by a familiar problem: those who did wrong seemed to prosper, while those who tried to live rightly struggled. Its advice is simple and repeated again and again: do not fret. Trust in the LORD and do good. Delight yourself in him. Commit your way to him. Be still and wait patiently.
To commit our way is to hand over not just a single problem, but the whole direction of our life: our plans, our future, our relationships, and all our worries about how things will turn out.
And the promise that follows is beautifully short: "He will do it." We do not have to work out how or when. Our part is to roll the weight onto him, to keep trusting, and to keep doing good while we wait.
Reflect
- What burden, plan or worry am I still trying to carry on my own shoulders instead of entrusting it to God?
- What would it look like, practically, for me to roll that weight onto him today and leave it there?
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I can trust you with my whole life and my future. Today I commit my way to you. I roll my plans, my worries and my unanswered questions onto you, and I choose to trust that you will act in your perfect time. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
