The day's word ASSIGN
Seven men to serve
Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will assign this responsibility to themActs 6:3, BSB
The early church was growing fast, and with growth came a problem. The Greek-speaking widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, while others were cared for. It was the kind of complaint that could easily have divided the young community along cultural lines.
The apostles did not brush it aside. They called everyone together and responded wisely: "Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will assign this responsibility to them."
Notice the qualifications. The job was handing out food, yet the men chosen had to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. In God's eyes, practical service is spiritual work, and it deserves the very best people.
Notice, too, that the apostles did not try to do everything themselves. They gave themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word, and trusted others with the rest. Every task was valued, and every person had a place.
One of those seven was Stephen, who would soon stand boldly before the council and become the first Christian martyr. His great ministry began by serving tables.
Reflect
- Do I see the practical, everyday tasks I do for others as spiritual work offered to God, or as less important than "real" ministry?
- What responsibility, large or small, might God be assigning to me in my church or community right now?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for every task you give me, even the ones that seem small or unseen. Fill me with your Spirit and wisdom so that I can serve faithfully and well. Help me to value the work of others, and to do my part with a willing and humble heart. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
